Why I am building Clara.

A note from James McGee on the everyday gap between seeing a bank balance and knowing what is genuinely available to spend.

Hi, I am James.

I started building Clara because checking a bank balance often creates more confidence than it should. You can see money in the account and feel fine, even when half of it already belongs to rent, direct debits, subscriptions, or the days still left before payday. The number is accurate, but it is not the answer you need.

I kept coming back to a simpler question: what is actually safe to spend today? Not what was spent last month, and not a generic rule about saving. I wanted a useful amount based on the money you have, the commitments that are approaching, and how long that money needs to last.

That is the gap Clara is designed to close. You connect your accounts with read-only access. Clara looks for recurring bills and spending patterns, then brings budgets, subscriptions, and payday planning into one view. The AI assistant is there so you can ask a normal question, such as whether you can afford a night out, without translating it into spreadsheet formulas first.

I am 19, I founded JEMA Software Ltd, and I have built Clara solo so far. That means I am careful about what I claim and what I ship. Clara is not finished, it does not know everything, and it will not make financial decisions for you. My job is to make the information in front of you clearer enough that your own decision is less of a guess.

Clara is currently being tested ahead of a planned September 2026 launch. I am working through the details that make a money product trustworthy: reliable connections, understandable calculations, useful error states, and privacy choices that do not hide behind vague wording. The product will keep changing as those tests show what needs work.

If the balance-versus-safe-to-spend problem feels familiar, you can join the waitlist. I will use the list to share access updates and let people know when Clara is ready to try. There is no card required to join.
